Everyone is going green! There are organizations, clubs, consortium's, committees, you name it, everyone is going green! Though it often appears this movement is aimed at the industrial and commercial level, and not so much at the individuals. Yet it is us, the people, who really make the difference! So what are some of the things we are doing? What could we do better? Is it fun being green? Can I afford to be green? There are many questions that come to mind when we take the first step. Lucky for us, there are lots of resources to help!
Fun? You betcha! Give your gas-guzzler a break, and go on an adventure! Grab a bicycle, head to the nearest public transit station, or go for a walk! I often take a day on the weekend, grab my bike, and jump on the Metrolink and go for an adventure downtown, at forest park, or wherever my pedals take me. Its a great way to get some exercise, see the world from a different perspective, and rub elbows with the interesting people around us! Maybe even a bicycle trip to a local farmers market for a fresh fruit snack!
My view from a St. Louis Metro Bus, on the way to see the new City Garden!Local shelters and humane societies are always in need of shredded paper, old blankets, water jugs, and other items for their animal care needs. There are also many resale charities that will take our old items we have no use for anymore. This is also a way to be green and save money! I also enjoy shopping at these venues, some interesting items can be found, and often these items have a story and a past behind them which makes them even more special!
Reusable shopping bags are a great invention, but if you are anything like me, you often remember you left them at home while in the checkout lane! Make a spot for them in your trunk, and put them back after you put your groceries away, so they are there for the next trip!
Gear up! Going green is so much fun and invigorating, and forces your awareness of the beauty around us! We can make our impact lighter, and we can always learn and grow! If you want to learn more about the things we can do, meet some like minded people, and have a good time, visit the Green Homes Festival this coming Saturday at the beautiful Grandel Square! (Adjacent to the Dancing In The Street Fest!) I will be there all day volunteering and trying to get everyone excited about being green! I hope you get outside and enjoy the fresh air that weekend, and I hope to see you there!
