Anyone who knows me, knows I am a Ornamental Grass gardener. I like stuff that is drought tolerant, neglect worthy, and only needs to be touched once a year. Lucky for us Missouri gardeners there are many native grasses that fit the bill. There are very few native perennials that have beautiful flowers that fit that description, with the exception of the
Purple Coneflower, Echinacea purpurea.

This plant never fails to bloom. It also has a long bloom for a perennial, often starting in mid May and blooming through the whole summer. I have witnessed little problems with this perennial, and trust me, I have been known to neglect plants, and this one tolerates neglect well. It is very drought tolerant, although it does prefer to be watered regularly. This plant will also seed plentiful, so its great as a filler. Perhaps the biggest bonus; this plant attracts birds and butterflies!

Its a bit late in the season, but if your still planting, purple coneflower does well when planted late with proper care. Please keep natives in mind when you can, and prepare to see more and more of these popping up around campus. I'll see you outside!
