Tree of the Month...

Fall is here, and if you are anything like me, you are excited about the beautiful fall colors. Unfortunately due to lack of rain this year, and especially this fall thus far, the colors may not be the best, but that won't stop me from my annual fall leaves tour!

One of my favorite fall trees is also one of my favorite trees all round, but due to the fact we may not see many of these around soon due to the oncoming Emerald Ash Borer, I felt it was time to spotlight it this fall. The Autumn Purple Ash! (Franxinus americana 'Autumn Purple')

This tree is one of my favorites because it is a proven tree, very strong against storm damage and other issues. They have a long lifespan unlike many flowering trees, and make great trees for climbing children! Ash is also a valued timber Ash have a variety of wood uses, but it is very popular in making guitars.

Autumn Purple Ash gets pretty large in maturity, upwards of fifty feet, and just as wide. In other words, this is not a good tree to plant near power lines. It is although, a very clean tree, so it won't drop much of a mess to clean up until its annual leaf drop. It also prefers a lot of sun and good moisture, but it has proven to be very tolerant of our local conditions, although a little supplemental watering during the hot dry months will do this tree some good.

I have high hopes this tree will be around for a long time, as it is one of my favorite shade trees. I hope everyone is enjoying our beautiful fall weather, and I'll see you outside!
